God's word in today's world

Take courage

Sometimes Paul’s imprisonment became too much for him. Sometimes he was uncertain and wondered if everything was worth it. Sometimes his mood was really, really low. But other times he had courage to go on: 14… most of the followers of Jesus here have become far more sure of themselves in the faith than ever, speaking out fearlessly about God, about the Messiah.

Sometimes I also become a bit discouraged and wonder whether everything is worth it. Times when my hardship (which is actually not really hard at all!) is too hard. In times like these small letters from others encourage me to get up again and to face life head-on. I received this e-mail from Chrissie:

Looking back on my life, I can see that God is wonderful.

Hysterectomy and Mastectomy with three small children. But my wonderful husband helped me to get through it all. He helps me today still.

In 2009 eight of us, all women, were in a kombi on our way back from training. A large truck with a trailer did a U-turn in front of us and we eight crashed into it. One lost her life. Another had serious injuries leading to many operations afterwards. I had to have eight back operations. But for God nothing is impossible.

I fell seriously ill with Osteoarthritis, Parkinson’s epilepsy and hardening of the arteries in my head.  But God helps me.

I was attacked on my farm, my own firearm held against my head, but God saved me.

What hardship this is. The following stand out like shining spotlights:

  • Looking back on my life, I can see that God is wonderful.
  • But for God nothing is impossible.
  • But God helps me.
  • God saved me.

Chrissie’s e-mail really encouraged me.

May we live the hardship in our lives so that it will encourage others!

Bible Reading

Philippians 1:12-18

Reflection

Are you experiencing hardship?

Does your way of life encourage others?

Do others get up because of you?

Prayer

Father, again I have to confess, because often when things aren’t going well I throw my toys out of the cot. My way of life does not always encourage others. On the contrary. But I do want to encourage others like Chrissie does, and I want to lift them up through my example. I cannot do it on my own. That is why I ask You to help me please. Amen
