God's word in today's world

Your reward is coming

It is said that a Christian’s benefits are out of this world. And it’s true! Our reward comes in life hereafter.

So, when we work, we mustn’t work for our earthly bosses. They’re only human and can disappoint us. We must work for our Heavenly Father. He will never let us down. He will give us the best always.

24Work from the heart for your real Master, for God, confident that you’ll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind always that the ultimate Master you’re serving is Christ.

When you realise that your workplace is your calling, your work becomes so much easier. When you realise that you in fact work for God, it becomes even easier. Would you ever want to disappoint God? Will you steal time from your earthly boss to do your own thing? Certainly not when you know you’re actually working for God.

When we work for God and believe that our real reward for services rendered will be paid in eternity after this life, we are satisfied with what we receive at work and we can look forward to all the bonuses we will receive in heaven.

Does this mean we have to be satisfied with what we have and not dream of an increase or a bigger or better post? Do I just have to sit there and take it – even if I’m treated badly? No, I don’t think so. God expects us to take a stand against injustice, also for others who may not be able to take a stand. However, the way in which we do it must confirm our calling.

Maybe your season in that first post is past and God may have another post in mind for you. Another place where He calls you to go and work for Him. Therefore, it is so important that you should be on the same wavelength as the Holy Spirit, because only then will you be able to hear where God is calling you to go.

We must take this seriously. Sometimes Paul is very direct and gives it to us straight: 25The sullen servant who does shoddy work will be held responsible. I don’t like such a sword hanging over my head, but we do have to listen to the truth now and then. If we are lazy and do not do the work we were appointed to do, we cannot expect a big bonus right now or in the hereafter. On the contrary …

Whether you work here or there, know that you are actually working for God. Do the best you can. Show people what a star employee or employer looks like. God sees you and He loves to reward a faithful worker.

And if you’re the boss, don’t think you will be treated differently: 1And masters, treat your servants considerately. Be fair with them. Don’t forget for a minute that you, too, serve a Master—God in heaven.

Scripture

Colossians 3:18-25 + 4:1

Reflection

Who do you work for?

How do other people see this?

Can you expect a bonus?

Prayer

Father, You know it is not always easy at work. Please help me to look beyond my circumstances. Please help me to trust You to take my hand and to help me be a faithful worker. Amen.
