God's word in today's world

Certainty in an uncertain world

Uncertainty is bad for you. It taps your energy and makes you so tired. Uncertainty makes you wonder about the future and especially when you have children and you wonder about their future, you become afraid.

I’m sure that if each of us had to list all the things we’re uncertain about, we would all end up with a long list. For most of us, the country we live in and the government would probably be close to the top. Those who own land will wonder whether they will still have it. And the power situation remains uncertain all the time. And those who think their jobs are safe should probably not be that certain.

Maybe it’s the weather patterns that are simply too uncertain for planting …

Some people may say that I’m pessimistic, but every day I meet people facing great uncertainty who do not know which way to turn. Uncertainty has become a part of many people’s lives and that is so tiring.

I wish I had a magic wand to wipe all uncertainty from people’s lives, but as we know there is no such thing. However, God’s Word provides us with one big piece of certainty: 2My aim is to raise hopes by pointing the way to life without end. This is the life God promised long ago—and he doesn’t break promises!

One box that we can tick. We don’t have to be uncertain about what is going to happen to us when we breathe our last breath. We will receive an enormous gift, eternal life. We who believe in Jesus receive life hereafter, which will never end, free of charge, mahala, at no charge. And you don’t have to work for it.

Look again. It doesn’t say all who have done good will receive eternal life. Even less does it say that eternal life is offered on a silver platter to those who have never ever sinned. No, the only requirement is faith.

If you believe in God, your ticket to heaven has been reserved. Even if you arrive at the gates of heaven without the ticket, you need not worry, because the Bible teaches us that the names of us who believe in God are written in the book of life. Peter will turn around then and there, look up your name in the book, and let you in with a big smile.

That is what Jesus made possible for us on the cross. He took punishment for sin from the equation, by giving his life for our sin. And that’s why those of us who believe in God can simply walk over.

Amidst the heap of uncertainties, we must hold onto this huge promise of God. In a way, the heap of uncertainties grows smaller, because if we know that God has taken care of life hereafter, He will obviously take care tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that.

Let’s chase uncertainty away. Let’s believe that God will come through for us in any way. Let’s hold onto his promises and live a life filled with joy and peace, even though the picture is rather dull to others.

Scripture
Titus 1:1-4

Reflection
What do the uncertainties around you look like?
What more can you hold onto?
Do you believe God’s promises?

Prayer
Father, I really needed this one, because life out there doesn’t look good. I must confess, my faith sometimes wobbles, even my faith in You. But I want to say this again to You and to myself. I believe in You. I believe in your promises. This is all I can hold onto. Amen.
