Be vigilant
Judges 7:7 God said to Gideon: “I’ll use the three hundred men who lapped at the stream to save you and give Midian into your hands. All the rest may go home.”
Gideon was on his way to wage war against the Midianites, who were giving the people such a hard time. After the first call to fight, about 32,000 men signed up. Yet God insisted their numbers be reduced. If they triumphed with such a massive army, they would surely claim the glory for themselves, boasting that their own strength had saved them.
First, Gideon sent home all those who were afraid. More than half packed their bags and said fighting was not for them. But there were still too many. Interesting how the men were chosen next.
God told Gideon to look: the men who stood and scooped up the water with their hands, while still watching what was happening around them, must go and fight with him. And those who knelt and sat to drink had to pack their bags.
Gideon was going to take on the enemy with only 300 vigilant men. Far too few in human eyes, but with God on their side they were a superior force.
We know that God gave the victory. It was because His Spirit confused their enemies, causing them to abandon all their chariots and run away with their tails between their legs before a shot could be fired. That’s what God does.
Yet God gathered a special group of men for Himself. Those who were vigilant. They were mentally ready for battle, and with them God could walk a special path.
God also wants to make the enemy lose in our world. He also confuses them so that they run away, and all the glory goes to Him. But we must learn from the men God had gathered for war.
We must also be vigilant. Even today, an enemy stalks our steps, seeking to derail us at every turn and force us off course. We must expect the enemy and be ready for war. Then war may come; God will let us win.
Prayer
Father, thank you for fighting for me. Help me to be vigilant and ready for war …

Do this now
Today, intentionally notice a specific situation where you usually react poorly, such as stress, temptation, or negative thoughts.
When this happens, stop for a few seconds, take a breath, and pray, “Lord, help me choose right.”
Choose one concrete response in advance, such as walking away, remaining silent, or saying something positive, and do it when the moment comes.
