God's word in today's world

Being satisfied and money matters

I always make a joke by saying when I ask people how much is enough, they say more. No, I haven’t ever heard anybody say that, but when you see how some people chase after wealth, it seems as if they’re saying more and more and more, please.

Don’t take this the wrong way. There’s nothing wrong with being rich. Many people have worked hard for they have now and to you I say, ”Good for you!”. Enjoy the fruit of your labour to the utmost.

A woman from one of the richest families in the country had a problem with all that money. It really bothered her. One day she sat down and calculated what she needed in a year. With the rest she serves a whole bunch of non-profit organisations. A wise decision. It makes sense.

But the chasing after wealth can make you bark up the wrong tree and barking gets you nowhere. On the contrary, it makes you tired and has nothing to do with real joy.

Does this mean I have to let go of the dreams to work hard so that one day I will have enough to live a good life? Certainly not! We may have dreams. We can dream, but not at the expense of others and even less at the expense of our dream about our purpose here on earth.

Even God’s Word warns us against this: 5Don’t be obsessed with getting more material things. Be relaxed with what you have.

The author of Hebrews knew his readers. He knew people often focused too much on wealth. Well, this still seem to be true today.

I think we worry far too much about keeping up with the Joneses, envying what our superior at work, the boss or even our friends possess. Because then we want it too. The shiny car. The luxury vacations, the house with the sparkling lights.

Again, there’s nothing wrong with those things, but they shouldn’t be what we focus on. So often we long for more, more, that we don’t even enjoy what we have. Very often the desire for more take our eye off the ball and we miss all the catches.

Be satisfied with what you have for a change. Be grateful for everything. Confess if you have focused too much on this and have lost sight of God and His calling for your life. If you are so privileged to have more than enough, share some of it and make a difference in the lives of others. That’s what Jesus would have done.

Jesus must be the priority in our lives. Chase to be more like Him. Live He did and share it. You will be different.

Scripture
Hebrews 13:1-8

Reflection
Are you satisfied?
Who or what is the most important in your life?
Where do you have to change direction a bit?

Prayer
Father, You are most important in my life. Help me to live in such a way that my actions confirm it. I pray this in Jesus’ Name, amen.
