God's word in today's world

Believe, listen, do

How strong is your faith? How far would you go for what you believe in? Where would your road of faith end? Where would you stop acting in faith and start thinking you might be mad?

What if you got this idea to build a kind of vehicle that would take you and your family outside the earth’s atmosphere for a few months, only coming back when earthquakes have wiped out every living person on earth. Would you embark on such a huge task that would ruin you financially and obviously expose you to the greatest amount of ridicule in human memory?

You can just imagine the headlines: “Mad pastor building a modern ark. Where does he think he’s going? LOL! Crazy.”

I suspect this is what Noah must’ve felt like. Busy building a huge ship on dry land – no water in sight. People laughed out loud and wondered about his sanity. Where would the water come from or how would he get that heavy ship to water hundreds of kilometres away?

A few years ago, after a subterranean earthquake, we were shaken to our foundations seeing how quickly one enormous wave grew and simply flattened many large buildings. Thousands of people were displaced forever, many died.

The destruction of everything on earth is no longer such a far-fetched phenomenon. A plate or two shifting under the ground and the earth may move from her orbit with catastrophic consequences.

The idea to build a spaceship and shoot off to circle the earth for a while no longer seems so outrageous. The question, however, is whether your faith is strong enough to start building.

Noah’s faith was strong enough.

7By faith, Noah built a ship in the middle of dry land. He was warned about something he couldn’t see, and acted on what he was told. The result? His family was saved.

He did three things: believed, listened and acted. As simple as that. This isn’t nuclear physics. This isn’t impossible to do. Put your money where your mouth is. You say you’re a child of God. You say you believe He is in control.

With this bag of faith, we must keep listening to hear when God gives us a command. And then we have to go and do it. Our hands and feet must work to go and make a difference where we live, work and play.

No, I don’t think that God expects us to build a spaceship to go travelling in the heavens. I suspect He wants us to start believing, listening and doing right where we are.

Scripture
Hebrews 11:7

Reflection
Do you believe?
Do you hear?
Are you doing?

Prayer
Father, I must confess that my faith gets lost sometimes. But I do want to believe. I want to believe with everything in me, because I want to hear your voice, so that I can start doing. Amen.
