Between the fire and the fleece
Judges 6:39-40 Then Gideon said to God, “Don’t be impatient with me, but let me say one more thing. I want to try another time with the fleece. But this time let the fleece stay dry, while the dew drenches the ground.” God made it happen that very night. Only the fleece was dry while the ground was wet with dew.
We all know the story of Gideon and the wool mat that he put outside. First, the mat had to be wet and the ground dry. This time, his request was the other way around. The mat had to be dry and the ground wet.
And it’s not as if a miracle hadn’t already happened when he was called to war. When the Angel of the Lord met him there in the winepress, a sign of God’s power had already happened when fire came out of the rock and consumed the meat and bread right there.
I can completely understand why he put out that first fleece. This was about seeking confirmation; the second felt like testing God. And that’s something we’re taught never to do… right?
Gideon was afraid. He was hiding and doing his work quietly in the winepress. When God called him, he wasn’t sure if God had chosen the right person. He was just the son of an ordinary farmer. That is actually why he asked, “Who am I that God has chosen me to lead the people out of oppression?”
Hiding in the winepress, Gideon spoke his mind to the angel. He openly questioned whether God was still with His people and whether He even cared anymore, given the desperate crisis they were facing. Their enemies had conquered them, and they were struggling.
That is why he looked for confirmation that he wasn’t imagining this calling. He wanted to be sure that victory wouldn’t depend on his own strength, because then it would definitely not work.
The fire from the rock had already proven it was the Lord. The first sign of the fleece confirmed that God was present and entirely capable of keeping His word. And yet, gripped by fear, Gideon asked for confirmation just one more time.
God does not shy away from people who are afraid. You can honestly take your uncertainty to the Lord and ask for guidance. God may not reveal Himself today in signs like fire and mats, but He opens His heart to us through His Word. He will show up in your world the moment you look for Him.
