God's word in today's world

Call and called

Judges 4:4-5 Deborah was a prophet, the wife of Lappidoth. She was judge over Israel at that time. She held court under Deborah’s Palm between Ramah and Bethel in the hills of Ephraim. The People of Israel went to her in matters of justice.

It’s interesting that a woman was a leader of Israel. She was sitting quietly under a palm tree when the leadership group came to her. Oppressed, exhausted, and afraid, the people returned to Deborah.

She instructed Barak to gather ten thousand men and lead them to the mountain. From there, God would lure Sisera and his chariots to the stream, delivering him into Barak’s hands. It was there that God gave the people their victory.

Here, we catch another glimpse of God’s character. Even when the Israelites went their own way, God didn’t walk away. He stayed near, deeply involved and ready with a solution. God spoke to His people. God led His people.

He saw an oppressed people and presented a clear plan for their liberation. He Himself said that He was going to break the enemy into pieces and deliver them into the hands of His people.

Did you realise that you don’t have to be perfect, sinless, or completely ‘clean’ to come to God? The Israelites were far from perfect when they cried out to Him, yet they sought and found Him anyway. Therefore, we can also draw near to God just as we are.

And here is the promise: just as God helped the Israelites every time they went to Him, so He will help you too. He will give guidance. He will help make plans. He will even help you take the next step.

So, when you find yourself stuck somewhere today, don’t just ask, “Lord, help me,” but ask, “Lord, what is the next step?” And then you can also say, “Father, thank you for walking this path with me, not only showing me, but also helping me.”

And remember, just as God used ordinary people like Deborah and Barak, He wants to use you today to help other people. Point them to God and tell them your God story. You might just save a life!

Prayer
Father, please show me the next step and thank you for walking with me. Show me the person I must help today …

Questions
Where in my life do I need God’s guidance right now?
Am I willing to take the next step, even if I feel unsure?
Who can I help today by pointing them to God?

Do this now
Ask God very specifically today, “What is my next step?” and write it down.
Take a small step in obedience, even if it feels uncomfortable or uncertain.
Look around you and intentionally help one person today, even if it’s just with a word of encouragement or a prayer.
