God's word in today's world

Don’t click the “unfriend” button

The world has changed completely and nowadays we are exposed to things that our parents couldn’t even imagine. Look at social platforms, for example. On Facebook you can meet thousands of strangers and in a way, you’re invited into their lives. Sometimes I want to respond with TMI (too much info) – you’re sharing far too much information with the world. Maybe you should rather keep your private life private.

People don’t realise that the picture and the words they post about their lives open the door to their hearts, and that sometimes the picture you see inside there is not that pretty. Well, if you have had enough about another person’s mess, there’s an unfriend button. But it doesn’t feel right to me to click that button. It’s as if you’re slamming the door in someone’s face.

I’m not used to the new way of doing and managing friendships yet.

My friend and I were Facebook “friends” with a group of guys who no longer believed. I must confess that the messages they posted and the picture that this painted of their hearts weren’t pretty.

Worst of all is that they used to work for and in the church …

They mocked Christians. They made jokes about the church that were in poor taste. They jeered at people who say there is a Creator God who had sent his Son to die for all the sin of sinners.

It disgusted me. My friend unfriended each them.

I continue to keep them as “friends”, because I keep hoping that they’ll read one of my stories one day and that the Holy Spirit will use it to turn their heads and hearts back to God.

I even pray for that. I ask God to intervene, because He can. Yes, I know each person has to decide and that God has given humans free will to decide which side their going to after their life on earth. My naïve faith hopes and prays.

And then I read this: 4-8Once people have seen the light, gotten a taste of heaven and been part of the work of the Holy Spirit, once they’ve personally experienced the sheer goodness of God’s Word and the powers breaking in on us—if then they turn their backs on it, washing their hands of the whole thing, well, they can’t start over as if nothing happened. That’s impossible. Why, they’ve re-crucified Jesus! They’ve repudiated him in public! Parched ground that soaks up the rain and then produces an abundance of carrots and corn for its gardener gets God’s “Well done!” But if it produces weeds and thistles, it’s more likely to get cussed out. Fields like that are burned, not harvested.

The heading of this pericope in The Message is: “Re-Crucifying Jesus”.

Let’s make sure that God doesn’t unfriend us …

Scripture
Hebrews 6:4-8

Reflection
Do you have friends who are starting to doubt their faith?
Do you pray for them?
What do you do to make sure you keep to the right path?

Prayer
Father, may I never forget about You. May I never be unfriended. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
