God's word in today's world

Don’t play on a slippery slope

Click here to go to the Scripture: 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

The devil will never come to me with the temptation to rob a bank or steal a Bar One in a shop. And he will never try and let me get caught up in a web of drugs. He knows that there is no hope of succeeding as I would never give in to temptations like that.

Therefore, he pulls other tricks from his sleeve to tempt me – things where it is difficult to really know what is right and what is wrong.

14Don’t become partners with those who reject God. How can you make a partnership out of right and wrong?

It doesn’t matter who you are or how strong or weak your faith is or for how long or short you’ve been a Christian, you will face temptations. We have to fight against them with everything in us and take care that we don’t slip and slide. We must try very hard to distinguish between right and wrong and we must make really sure that we don’t overstep the mark. In fact, we shouldn’t even play on the slope of evil, because we can easily slip and fall where the lines blur. Stay far away from the temptations that look so attractive, because then you can be sure that you will be safe.

It’s a very simple message: 16… But that is exactly what we are, each of us a temple in whom God lives. God himself put it this way: “I’ll live in them, move into them; I’ll be their God and they’ll be my people. So leave the corruption and compromise; leave it for good,” says God. 17“Don’t link up with those who will pollute you. I want you all for myself. I’ll be a Father to you; you’ll be sons and daughters to me.”

God lives in us! We are not alone! What a wonderful promise, especially when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death and we start to wonder whether God is near. Together with this we have a responsibility to keep God’s house clean. How would you feel if your housemate leaves all the dirty dishes in the sink and throws a banana peel on the floor next to the pile of dirty clothes? How long will you ask nicely before you give him or her an ultimatum?

God is unhappy when our lives are full of sin. We know what is right and what is wrong. We know where the line is drawn between the two and we know exactly when we cross it. Now is the time to get rid of sin. Remember: Sin is also that which we know we should do, but don’t do. It’s time to clean house.

I’ve often prayed for things in my life and not received, for one reason or another. I was angry that the guy around the corner got it, but not me. However, I realize now why God never granted my request. It was the sin in me that bothered Him.

Yes, I know God is greater than my sin and that He can share blessings generously even though I am a sinner. I still believe that God blesses so much easier if I do my part and do not cross the line.

Come on! You know what I’m talking about. That feeling of discomfort rising up inside you when you do it. Let it go! Make it right for God to live inside you.

Reflection

Does God enjoy living inside you?

Does sin live inside you?

What should you eradicate in your life?

Prayer

Our Father, I know there are things in my life that make it uncomfortable for You to live inside me. Thank you that your Spirit reminds me of it. Please help me to obey Your voice and let go of things that make You unhappy. Amen
