God's word in today's world

Face up to opposition

Yes, Paul forgot his coat and his books. Although Paul had a few flaws as well, God still used him. And funnily enough, God even uses a crooked stick like me to make a difference in other people’s lives. Despite all my flaws.

Yes, you too! God wants to use you too, even if you think you don’t make the cut. Even if you think you have too many flaws. But God even wants to use you despite your flaws.

And just as you eventually cross the bridge and realise that everyone has been called, the first challenge appears on the horizon. Just ask Paul: 14-15Watch out for Alexander the coppersmith. Fiercely opposed to our Message, he caused no end of trouble. God will give him what he’s got coming.

This guy didn’t keep quiet. When Paul said something, he tried his best to oppose him. Alexander went as far as to slander God. These were serious attacks against the truth and if you weren’t sure about what you stood for and what you fought against, you could easily lose your way.

Therefore, when we hear God calling us, amidst all our flaws, we shouldn’t be too keen to take up the offer. This may seem weird, as if we can choose to be God’s hands and feet here on earth or not.

Yes, we do have a choice, but when we truly understand what God had done for us through Jesus on the cross, then we want to choose to do something. Then we feel compelled to let others share in the amazing message of salvation. Then the choice has actually been made for us.

However, we shouldn’t rush in blindly and think it will always be moonshine and roses. If we put ourselves out like a toffee apple, someone is going to take a bite. We will meet with opposition. If we take people on, there will be noise and upset.

You cannot do it on your own. We must take hands with friends, family and colleagues. A double rope is so much stronger than a single one. When we have used up all our energy, someone else can take the lead while we reload our batteries. In this way we can encourage one another to remain standing against those who want to silence us.

Fortunately, we also know that God will never abandon us. God will protect us against those who want to get the better of us. We must ensure that we have a stable relationship with God. We must put aside sufficient time every day to talk to God. In this relationship God will guide us; he will comfort us when others attack us.

We must also know that God will deal with people. They will be punished for their bad deeds one day.

It is true: God wants to use you just as you are. Even if you think you’re not suitable. And we should expect opposition. It’s OK, because sometimes the truth hurts and then people will try and take you out.

Fortunately, God’s Spirit helps us to keep standing. He will dry our tears and give us the strength to take on the world again tomorrow.

Scripture

2 Tim 4:14-15

Reflection
Do people sometimes oppose you?
How do you deal with them?
How does God want you to deal with them?

Prayer
Father, I don’t handle criticism well. Please help me distinguish what to take to heart and what to leave to You. Amen.
