God's word in today's world

God Himself locks the door

Genesis 7:16 Then God shut the door behind him.

Sometimes it feels like your prayers don’t rise above the ceiling. When facing a major decision and seriously asking God for guidance yet receiving no apparent answer, it is easy to feel that God is entirely absent.

I suspect Noah may have had a direct line, but sometimes he probably wondered too, especially when there wasn’t a cloud on the horizon. But he remained faithful and kept building. When not even a single drop had fallen, he loaded the ark full of animals.

Some of the animals must have been a challenge to get into the ark, because they were wild animals. But in the end, Noah managed it. The ship was loaded, but there wasn’t a cloud in the sky yet. Then God himself came and closed the door of the ark.

Why? Because in this special relationship with Noah, God cares. He protects him and his family and the animals by making sure no storm or person can harm them.

God builds an irrevocable dividing wall between His children and the animals on one side and the threatening, screaming people on the other. The scene powerfully captures protection for the former and finality for the latter.

God was the director of Noah and his family’s life story. He did not sit somewhere in the sky throwing out a bunch of orders. God got involved, and He Himself made sure protection was in place. Through God’s hands, the key turned in the lock. And then it started to rain.

Intimacy with God defines itself as both a boundary and an embrace. He draws a circle of closeness around me. Safe inside and chaos outside. As He closes the doors of the sea, He keeps the turbulence in place so that I can find peace.

And when I’ve done my part, God does the rest. He closes the door that I cannot control. Salvation remains His work and not my achievement. That’s why I can build obediently today and let go, trusting in Him, because the outcome is in His hands.

Prayer
Father, thank you for confirming that You are involved with me. No matter how big the challenge or how fierce the storms, You surround me with Your protection …

Questions
Where are you waiting for God to close the door? Open or closed.
Where do you experience God’s protection?
What do you need to surrender to God today?

Now do this
Think of something in your life that you need to release to God right now. Tell Him. “Lord, I trust You to close the door or keep it open.”
Write down what ark you are currently building. That faith project or prayer you are waiting for. Pray that God Himself will complete the final step.
Remind yourself today that God’s protection is not passive. He Himself closes the door behind you so that you can rest in His peace.
