Exodus 33:7-11 Moses used to take the Tent and set it up outside the camp, some distance away. He called it the Tent of Meeting. Anyone who sought God would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp.

And God spoke with Moses face-to-face, as neighbours speak to one another. When he would return to the camp, his attendant, the young man Joshua, stayed—he didn’t leave the Tent.

God loves humans immensely. Yet, here we see how the Israelites did a very wrong and bad thing by making and worshipping a golden calf. They reduced God to something they could control. A God with boundaries, golden boundaries. They tried to contain God in a box, so to speak.

And yet He does not spit them out far away from Him. No, He saw their brokenness, their inability to serve Him, their self-centeredness, their sinful nature that broke through the surface all too often. And then the amazing: He came to move in with them.

How much more grace can God give, one wonders? But that is precisely the miracle of grace: it has no boundaries. It does not stop. It cannot be used up by humans. God just keeps on giving.

It is significant that after the ‘golden calf’ catastrophe, God chose to dwell in a tent among the Israelites. He knew they couldn’t succeed without Him and that He needed to be close at hand to guide them. When they had questions or needed help, they could go to the tent where He would help them.

For Moses, it was like two friends meeting to talk. Not simply a casual chat, but a sacred space where he could ask questions, argue, plead, and listen. Especially after the Israelites’ rebellion, he ran to God for guidance. Moses sought Him out, knowing that God was the only true source of wisdom.

We must remind each other: God’s grace overflows. Thank goodness. Let’s not settle for our own efforts. Like Moses, let’s approach God directly, finding a place where we can meet Him and ask for His guidance.

And may we then, like friends, walk hand in hand with Him through life and help others to see God.

Father, with Your love, I can conquer the storm. With Your guidance, I can walk into the darkness …

Today, choose a specific place (chair, room, or outside) where you want to meet God and sit there for 5–10 minutes.
Talk honestly to God about what is going on in your heart, as if you were talking to a friend.
Write down one thing you need God’s guidance for and intentionally ask Him about it.
