God's word in today's world

God walks with us differently

Joshua 6:20 The priests blew the trumpets. When the people heard the blast of the trumpets, they gave a thunderclap shout. The wall fell at once. The people rushed straight into the city and took it.

The Israelites finally arrived in the promised land. But as the saying goes: It was not a walk in the park. They did not get it for free, because the land first had to be cleared of all the evil people who lived there.

Fortunately, the Israelites did not have to do the clearing work by themselves. God was there, and how! I mean, they had to conquer a whole big city. I suspect that would make any nation or army very nervous. Remember, these Israelites’ parents were slaves, and they didn’t know much about war.

God knew this, and He had a different plan on purpose. The war manoeuvres were quite strange. No battering rams, no siege tactics and no clever plans. No, they simply had to walk around the city with the ark, indicating the presence of God, going before them. The ark went with them just behind the seven priests.

On the seventh day, they walked around the city seven times, and with trumpets blowing and the people shouting at the top of their lungs, the walls collapsed.

First, the Israelites had to march around the city once a day for six days. Some must have wondered what was going on, but in the silent walk, you meet your Creator. In the silence, God speaks to His children.

God is also present. He marches with the people, right in front. That is our God. He does not just send angels to do the work on His behalf. He is there Himself, and things happen that do not always make sense to ordinary people.

And God is still the same today. He is with us in the fight. He wants to help us. He will help us. We simply need to make room for Him. That is why it is good to regularly come before God and quietly allow Him to speak to us. This is where everything begins to make sense and where things happen that do not always make sense to the world.

Prayer
Father, thank you for never leaving me alone. Thank you that I can trust You and that You are right here with me in the fight. Help me stay silent so that I can hear Your voice and guidance …

Questions
Is there an area where God is calling me to obedience, even though it doesn’t make sense?
Do I get impatient when God’s plan seems slow or strange?
Do I give God enough space to speak to me in silence?

Do this now
Identify one thing today that you know God is asking of you, even though you don’t fully understand it.
Set aside five minutes to sit in silence, asking God to guide you.
Take that simple step of obedience today and trust that God will bring down the “walls” in His time.
