God’s grace keeps going on and on
Genesis 24:7 “God, the God of Heaven, took me from the home of my father and from the country of my birth and spoke to me in solemn promise, ‘I’m giving this land to your descendants.’ This God will send his angel ahead of you to get a wife for my son.”
We are very familiar with the story of how God called Abraham to leave his father’s house and move to another country, without a map and without a picture of where he was going.
We also know the story of God promising Abraham a son, and that Sarah laughed when she heard the news, because she knew it was humanly impossible at that age.
Then there is the suspenseful story of Abraham and Isaac. Just as Abraham stood with the knife in his hand, God stopped him and revealed a ram caught in the thicket, which was to be sacrificed in his son’s place.
God doesn’t just promise; He delivers. He doesn’t just start things; He sees them through.
We may know the story of how Isaac found a wife less well. Abraham was now very old. Sarah had already died, and Isaac deeply mourned her death. His heart was certainly not set on a new wife.
Abraham then called one of his workers and sent him to his native land to find a wife for Isaac. The worker was a little nervous, because how does one manage to persuade a young woman to leave her parents and go with a strange man to marry a man she has never met?
It happened just as Abraham predicted: God provided. An angel guided the way, ensuring every piece of the puzzle fell into place so that Rebekah would pack her bags and, as one might say, “The rest is history!”
God not only makes promises, but He also fulfils them. He is not just the initiator of our journey, but the one who maintains us through it. He continues to send His angels ahead to smooth paths and prepare hearts. When you think He has forgotten, He is already busy setting things right for you. He works quietly, but always faithfully.
Prayer
Father God, You work in my life. You make things happen. It’s just that sometimes I start too quickly …
Questions
Where has God recently gone ahead of you?
What are you still afraid of even though God offers to lead you?
Where can you see signs of His provision today?
Now do this
Think back to a time when God worked something out for you, even though it felt like nothing was happening for a long time, and thank Him for it.
Trust today that God is still working to smooth your path, even if you don’t see the outcome yet.
Do something small in faith that shows you believe His grace keeps on and on, even if it feels like you are still in the waiting period.
