Saul had just been secretly anointed as king. To prove that God had chosen him as king, Samuel laid out specific signs for Saul – from word about his missing donkeys to a sudden meeting with a band of prophets. Sure enough, everything played out precisely as Samuel said.

However, Saul received much more than just these signs. God renewed his inner self. He gave him inner equipment for a task that was actually too big for him to handle on his own. The Spirit of God came to live in Saul. Saul was an ordinary man, but the Spirit of God empowered him to become king.

We are all just ordinary people who cannot do much more than ordinary things. But when the Spirit works within us, He changes our hearts. We think differently. We act differently. We live differently, and we bear different fruit.

When the Spirit of God is at work within us, we gain strength to do things that we did not know we could do. It’s as if we climb into a telephone booth like Superman, and when we walk out in our new Spirit suit, nothing is impossible.

But besides allowing the Spirit to release His power in us, there is most often a period of preparation. Saul had to wait seven days before the prophets arrived.

And that’s something we don’t like very much – waiting. We want things to have fallen into place yesterday. But it’s in the waiting, in the silence, that we are actually equipped to release the power through us. That way we can do things for other people and make a big difference wherever we go.

God wants to work through you. He put His Spirit in you to work powerfully through you. Open your heart and give up the things that prevent the power of the Spirit from being released in you. The world around you will look different.

Father, thank you for choosing me to establish Your powerful actions in the world. Help me to wait quietly so that You can do Your thing in me …

Today, intentionally sit quietly for ten minutes without your phone or any noise and ask the Holy Spirit to work with you.
Write down one area where you know God wants to change or use you and pray specifically about it.
Then do one practical act of love, encouragement, or help for someone else today, so that God’s Spirit can be seen through your hands and words.
