The needle Jesus refers to actually is a door which gave entrance to Jerusalem.  The door or gate had the name of Eye of the Needle. When the huge gates which gave entrance to the city were closed at night for safety reasons people could still get into the city through the Eye of the Needle gate.

The doors were much smaller and travelers could not ride through it on their camels. It was so much smaller that they had to unload the camels and pull them through with great effort.

It therefore is not impossible for a camel to get through the Eye of the Needle but it is much more difficult. The same with a rich person. It definitely is not impossible for a rich person to get to heaven, but more difficult. It is more difficult because they have more things which tempt them from the road.
