Genesis 12:4-5 So Abram left just as God said, and Lot left with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. Abram took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot with him, along with all the possessions and people they had gotten in Haran, and set out for the land of Canaan and arrived safe and sound.

It is said that Sir Walter Scott was the first to use the three gun terms, lock, stock, and barrel, to describe someone who takes absolutely everything with them. That is why lock, stock and barrel became a metaphor for “the whole lot”.

And this can certainly be said of Abram: he took everything. Lock, stock, and barrel. Not only his family, but also his animals, his workers, and his entire business. Everything was uprooted because God had called him.

I wonder if I would be willing to do that. If God were to ask me today to pull up all my roots and go to a place I don’t even know the name of, would I do it? Would you do it?

Well, when I think about it now, my wife and I did it 13 years ago. We found that the Lord was calling us full-time for the Kruispad.com ministry. It was not an easy decision, because we had a nice car, a comfortable house, and children still at school. Everything and almost everyone around us said, “Play it safe!”

And yet … here we are! Our children have finished school and university; our house is paid for. When God called us, He promised He would take care of us. And He does! Every month. Yes, we were unsure and often wondered if we were doing the right thing, but God was and is faithful and kept His part of the bargain, to a superlative degree.

You only take such a leap when you know God intimately. It is in that closeness where trust is greater than fear and where His voice speaks louder than your uncertainty. And even when we struggled, we continued to trust in Him, because He remains faithful.

True intimacy with God requires steps of faith. To move even before you know where you are going. Abram left everything behind because he knew Who was calling him, not where he was going. Similarly, we discover that trust deepens when we walk in faithful obedience, even during uncertainty, and that God invariably does His part.

Prayer
Father, I want to trust You completely, so that I, like Abram, will go wherever You call me. But I am still afraid … Strengthen my relationship with You, so that I dare do what You ask.

Now do this
Think of one area in your life where God might be telling you to “move”, even if you don’t understand how. Ask for the courage to take that step.
Write down what is holding you back from fully trusting God and surrender it to Him in prayer today.
Do something symbolic to demonstrate your step of faith. Send the email, make the phone call, or pray the prayer you’ve been putting off.
