Light in the darkness
The power crisis in South Africa impacts the economy very badly. Many businesses had to close their doors. I wonder how many people died because operations could not be performed on them.
I wonder how many accidents happened because traffic lights didn’t work. Driving without streetlights in the middle of the night was a stark reminder of the light that streetlights bring.
Sin also casts a dark shadow over our lives. People bumped into each other because they couldn’t see. People stepped on others, simply because they didn’t know where the road was. People fell to their deaths because they couldn’t see the cliff.
A loving Father like God couldn’t bear this. His heart ached to see His children stumbling about in the dark. That’s why He put a new salvation plan on the table offering humanity the chance to live forever with Him in heaven.
Jesus came to earth and turned on the light. Well, He is indeed the light itself. There on the mountain, Peter himself saw Jesus’ body shining like a light. Jesus came to shine the light for people so that they would no longer flounder about in the dark.
If you are in the dark and have never seen light dispelling the darkness and making the scales fall off your eyes, you think that’s how it should be. You just accept that tripping over your own feet or maybe falling over a cliff at some point is how life works.
But once you’ve seen the light, you know there’s so much more to the world than just crashing into others everywhere. When a light like the morning star first begins to shine, a whole new world opens up.
When I walk through our town’s streets when the loadshedding has kicked in, I realise how dark it is without light and if I don’t have my bright flashlight with me, there’s a chance I will fall. Jesus is the morning star, the moon and the sun in our lives. Without Him, you are floundering about in the dark and might trip quite soon.
That’s why it is vitally important to let more and more light come into our lives by reading the Word of God. Peter testifies to the event on the mountain where he, John and James witnessed Jesus’ glorified body.
He saw Moses and Elijah there as well, who came to put a stamp on Jesus as Saviour. Jesus is the One appointed as the Light to come and save people from darkness. The Message, the Word, the Light is true.
19 We couldn’t be more sure of what we saw and heard—God’s glory, God’s voice. The prophetic Word was confirmed to us. You’ll do well to keep focusing on it. It’s the one light you have in a dark time as you wait for daybreak and the rising of the Morning Star in your hearts.
Never again doubt the source of your faith. Never again wonder if the Word of God is true. It’s a fact like the nose on your face. If you cannot see the path of life, go to God’s Word and let the Light illuminate your path for you.

2 Peter 1:16-21
Reflection
What makes you doubt your faith sometimes?
Do you believe that Jesus brings light to the dark world?
How does Jesus light your way through the world?
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for being the light to the dark world. Thank you, Father, for Your Word. I believe it’s the lamp and light for my feet through the world. Amen.
