God's word in today's world

Peace and joy and wisdom

When we started our ministry in 2010, I thought long and hard about what the name should be, but nothing came to mind. The vision grew slowly: God’s Word in modern-day language. To help people use God’s Word at the crossroads in their lives again. And the word “crossroads” jumped out.

We come to the crossroads so many times every day. How many times we have to decide are we going to continue with the usual road or rather turn left or right! Each option looks ok, but only one option is the right one. Often we take the wrong one, because we had too little insight about the road ahead. And the consequences weren’t good.

Oh, how we wish then that we could go back to have another chance at making a choice. But sometimes it’s too late and we don’t get another chance.

  • Like the guy who had just one more beer and driving home killed the little girl who ran in front of his car.
  • The businessman who only once accepted a couple of hot notes under the counter, today sitting in prison with no business, no family and no friends.
  • The woman who stood too close to her boss and then it just happened. And today there are broken families and lots of pain.
  • The teenage boy and girl who couldn’t hold back and their lives changed radically.

Every day we make lots of decisions at the crossroads in life. Some small. Some huge. So, we’re instructed: 5We don’t want anyone looking down on God’s Message because of their behaviour.

I try and help my children not to make the same mistakes I did. I have experience, lots of experience in making the wrong choices at the crossroads. I have experienced the pain of it and want to save them from taking those wrong turns. Unfortunately, their ears don’t hear, so they’ll feel what I felt. Very unwise.

Each of us can choose whether we want to hear or not. There is so much wisdom in the Word of God, but if we don’t read it, it’s as if we’re deaf to all the wisdom flowing from it. Just hear this wisdom from Proverbs 4: Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment. If you prize wisdom, she will make you great. Embrace her, and she will honor you.

The wisdom we find on every page of the Bible wants to take us by the hand and guide us so that we don’t bump our toes against the rocks. It wants to save us from falling over the cliffs and keep us walking the right paths.

May God help us and teach us through his Word. May He equip us with his wisdom so that it will go well with us. Then peace and joy will live in us.

Scripture
Titus 2:1-5

Reflection
Where do you need wisdom?
Where must you go and get it?
What does God say about this?

Prayer
Father, I need wisdom, lots of wisdom. Amen.
