Pull something out of the hat or even a miracle
Pull something out of the hat or even a miracle They must be so disappointed when the pregnancy test is negative again and again. Are they wondering how many times they have to try again? Are they also wondering when their funds will run out?
And how sad it must be for them to hear about yet another abortion? While they are longing with everything in them for a little baby, another little one is simply thrown away just like that, because it’s not the right time or a baby is just not welcome.
Sarah knew that her husband was longing for a son. His own son to take the family into the future. She also knew about God’s promise and that the promise would be fulfilled in one way only, and that she had to bear the baby. But did Abraham realise that she was nearly 90 years old, that the baby factory had never opened, and that chances at this stage were less than minus one that it would ever open?
But Abraham believed. He held onto the promise that God gave him. Even though the odds were against Sarah and him. Even though science was against it and people laughed at Abraham and Sarah behind their backs, they held onto God’s promise that they would have many descendants.
11By faith, barren Sarah was able to become pregnant, old woman as she was at the time, because she believed the One who made a promise would do what he said. 12That’s how it happened that from one man’s dead and shrivelled loins there are now people numbering into the millions.
I wonder how long I would be able to hold out? I wonder after how many years I would draw the line and give up? I wonder how long the promise would remain strong before it starts fading bit by bit?
After God had made the promise to Abraham, he had to wait 15 years before God renewed His promise. Then he and Sarah had to wait another 10 before Isaac was born.
But he kept believing patiently. Although he didn’t know how God would do it, he kept believing that God would be faithful. He knew God was the almighty Creator of heaven and earth for Whom nothing was impossible.
Abraham believed that God would simply say the word and the mountains on earth would move. Nothing was too big for God to do. Abraham believed he would be a father one day, even if it took a miracle.
We don’t know why not everyone can become parents. We can’t see around the corner; we don’t know if God is protecting us from heartbreak. We don’t understand.
But when God makes a promise to us, most of which appear in His Word, we must learn from Abraham and Sarah. We must hold onto those promises with everything in us. No matter what the science or the neighbours say, believe that God will provide for you, even if it takes a miracle. God will always fulfil His promises.

Reflection
Do you believe?
Do you believe that God will fulfil His promises?
Do you believe He can even do a miracle to fulfil His promises in your life?
Prayer
Father, thank you, You are a good God and You are not concerned with human science or plans. Thank you for fulfilling your promises again and again, no matter the cost. Please help me to keep believing, even though time has run out. Amen.
