Genesis 39:8-9 He said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here, my master doesn’t give a second thought to anything that goes on here—he’s put me in charge of everything he owns. He treats me as an equal. The only thing he hasn’t turned over to me is you. You’re his wife, after all! How could I violate his trust and sin against God?”

Joseph quickly climbed the ladder of success with his employer. As the saying goes: He was a very likeable guy. Everywhere he went, people liked him. Potiphar trusted him so much that he entrusted his entire life to him.

Even when he was thrown into prison, the chief warden of the prison liked him so much that he appointed him to look after all the other prisoners. With Joseph at the head, things went well in the prison, and of course, when things went well in the prison, things went very well with the chief warden, too.

Blessings followed Joseph wherever he went, overflowing to everyone he encountered. He was truly a chosen instrument in the hands of the Lord.

But this advantage also included some unpleasant things: temptations. His master’s wife had practically handed herself to him. They were entirely alone; the house was silent, and the secret would be theirs and theirs alone.

Joseph, within his own heart, would’ve known. This was a line he wasn’t prepared to break. Despite the weight of the temptation, his integrity remained his anchor. He was committed to God’s path, regardless of the cost, and he refused to let a moment of weakness define him.

There is a hard truth we must face: living within God’s will won’t grant us an escape from temptation; it often puts us directly in its path. In fact, the closer we walk with Him, the more intense the opposition becomes.

Joseph could stand strong, and even though he was falsely accused and even thrown into prison, he did not bend his knee to the lies. On his own, however, he would never have been able to resist so strongly. Only God could help him here.

It is only in an intimate relationship with the loving Father that you and I can stand strong against temptations. Our daily walk with God is our greatest defence. By strengthening that bond every day, we ensure we have the reinforcements ready the moment an uninvited temptation strikes.

Holy Spirit, I surrender. I cannot do it on my own, but with You I can face any temptations …

Where is my weak spot where temptation easily creeps in?
Have I set boundaries in advance, or do I only decide when I am already under pressure?
Do I truly believe that intimacy with God is my greatest protection against sin?

Today, think honestly about where temptation most easily enters your life.
Make a practical plan to avoid or change that situation.
Pray for God’s help and message a friend to pray with you about it.
