Sowing under grey clouds
Genesis 8:22 “For as long as Earth lasts, planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never stop.”
After the flood, the world fell silent. The chaos of the waters had subsided, but the earth was empty, wet, and desolate. Noah and his family stepped out of the ark onto land that was still muddy and quiet. They must have wondered: Will it happen again? Can we plant again, hope again, live again?
Then God stepped forward and made the promise. It was God’s way of saying: I have not only restored the earth, but I am also restoring the rhythm of life. He promised that nature’s seasons would once again be reliable. The flood was devastating, but it could not break God’s faithfulness.
George Washington Carver was born into slavery in America in the late 1800s. As a child, he had no access to school, and the world around him seemed full of injustice and brokenness. But he believed that God had built an order and rhythm into creation. He believed that every season had its time, and that nothing in God’s world was in vain.
He later became a scientist and agriculturalist and began to study God’s rhythms of sowing and reaping in the soil. While others exhausted their fields by planting only cotton, Carver discovered that soil could heal when you planted legumes such as peanuts and soybeans.
He often said, “Every morning I walk into the field and ask God to show me something of His creation.” His research not only changed agriculture, but it also saved the lives of thousands of farmers and brought hope in times of famine.
Carver also said, “My laboratory is God’s world.” He showed that intimacy with God happens not only during prayer, but also when you live with Him in His rhythms. When you sow with faith, wait with hope, and reap with gratitude.
We still live within that same promise today: God’s rhythms hold. Every season of your life, the cold and the heat, the summer and the winter, the sowing and the harvest, has meaning in His hands.
Perhaps you are now in a sowing season where you can only plant tears and prayer, or perhaps you are still waiting for something to grow. Do not lose heart. God’s faithfulness is not seasonal. He works through every phase, even the quiet, cold, or dry times. By living within God’s rhythm, you find the constant hope that a new spring is perpetually on its way.
Prayer
Father, I don’t always understand the rhythms and the seasons. But I believe that You are in control …
Questions
Where are you now in God’s seasons?
What seeds should you sow in faith today?
How do you wait hopefully between sowing and harvesting?
Now do this
Do something small today that sows hope. A kind word, a prayer, or an act of care, even if the clouds still seem grey.
Write down in which “season” you are now. Sowing, waiting, or harvesting. Ask for God’s wisdom to remain faithful where you are.
Remind yourself daily that God’s rhythms are reliable. Say out loud, “You are faithful in every season of my life.”
