Star moments
Genesis 15:5-6 5Then he took him outside and said, “Look at the sky. Count the stars. Can you do it? Count your descendants! You’re going to have a big family, Abram!” 6And he believed! Believed God! God declared him “Set-Right-with-God.”
If someone were to ask me to sum up Abram in one word, faith is the word that immediately comes to mind. Abram’s faith endured through thick and thin. When God told him to leave his country, Abram believed that God would make it work, and that’s why he could pack his bags and respond obediently.
When God promised him the moon and the stars, Abram believed it. Well, actually God pledged to him that his descendants would be as many as the stars – countless. And all Abram did was believe, regardless of how heavily the circumstances weighed against him and God’s dream for his life.
Many such ‘star’ promises exist within our own lives today, moments when things happen, and we know: it’s a promise of God that has been fulfilled in our world.
George Muller founded large orphanages in Bristol, England, and made a deliberate decision never to ask people for money. He wanted to reveal God’s promise of provision in a way that could strengthen people’s faith.
One morning, as usual, he called the children for breakfast, but there was one problem: there was no food. George’s faith did not waver. As usual, he told the children to pray and thank the Lord for the food.
They hadn’t even gotten to “amen” when the baker walked in with many loaves of bread. He said the Lord had woken him during the night and told him to bake bread for the orphanage. A few minutes later, the milkman arrived and unloaded gallons of milk, because his truck had broken down just around the corner …
George’s story is also full of star moments. Everything was accomplished through a strong stream of faith. In an intimate relationship with God, such a stream of faith and many star moments are possible.
George’s story is also filled with these star moments. Every achievement was carried by a steady stream of faith. Indeed, such a life, with the moments that define it, is made possible through an intimate relationship with God. Just try it.
Prayer
Father, I believe, really, but my star moments are not as many as the stars in the sky. Help me to work on my relationship with You and spend more time with You …
