God's word in today's world

The journey to Eternal Life has started

Often, truths remain hidden from you. For one reason or another, one might not be asking the right questions, or perhaps one does not stand still enough to let the meaning of something sink in.

So, I never stopped to dwell on, if I can call it, the event, or is it the meaning, of Eternal Life. Yes, we all know that we will live for eternity when we’ve accepted Jesus as our Saviour, we will live for eternity.

However, this is an incorrect statement. We’re not going to live forever. At this point, the true meaning of Eternal Life opened my mind, because Eternal Life is not coming in the future, but a present reality.

Eternal Life does not begin the day I lay my head down here on earth. No, we already began to live forever the day Jesus walked into our lives.

When we go to Kruger National Park, the excitement starts with the initial booking and continues as we plan and discuss the incredible experiences we’ll have.

At night around the fire we talk about the road we will take and where we will spend the night. We plan the menu and say who should bring what and who should take the lead each evening.

The night before you leave, you can hardly sleep and as usual, I wake everyone up far too early because I just can’t wait any longer for the Ford to turn its nose to the North.

When you know where you’re going, something else is in the air. It is an excitement that nothing or no one can take away from you. Even if you get a flat tyre at the side of the road, you take out the jack with a jump in your step and change the tyre in no time.

The fact that our journey to live forever has already begun should also make us excited. Because we have already started the journey, we have to walk differently through life. We know where we’re going and where it will take us.

Yet it is not always visible in our lives. Many times, obstacles in our way impede our speed. We collapse right there because a challenge has come our way.

The issue lies in that we focus on the problem or challenge or flat tire in our way, instead of focusing on the journey we’re on. When we focus on our journey and where we’re going, we will handle the challenges in our path differently.

2And now we’re telling you in most sober prose that what we witnessed was, incredibly, this: The infinite Life of God himself took shape before us.

Maybe we need to find somewhere to pull over and drink in what Jesus has managed for us. His death on the cross made it possible for us to already be on an Eternal Life journey. Make a point to enjoy the journey amidst all the flat wheels. We know where we’re going.

Scripture
1 John 1:1-4

Reflection
Do you believe that your journey of eternal life has already begun?
How does it change your journey on earth?
Do others notice the difference?

Prayer
Jesus, thank you that I could already begin the journey of Eternal Life. Help me to live life differently because of that. Amen.
