The way of true repentance
Psalm 51:1-4 Generous in love—God, give grace! Huge in mercy— wipe out my bad record. Scrub away my guilt, soak out my sins in your laundry. I know how bad I’ve been; my sins are staring me down. You’re the One I’ve violated, and you’ve seen it all, seen the full extent of my evil.
David made many big mistakes. He sinned greatly in the Lord’s eyes. He didn’t just give in to temptation and sleep with his neighbour’s wife; he tried to cover up his wrongdoing by sending her husband to die on the front lines of battle.
You have to wonder where David’s head was. How could he lose his way so completely? It is as if he forgot God altogether, and with that, his calling as the anointed leader set apart to guide his people.
It strikes me again that no one is too good, too great, or too devout a child of God to slip up in an unguarded moment and be left facing the consequences. It’s a big warning sign that’s put in front of each of us.
It’s Nathan the prophet who comes to expose David’s actions. David certainly got a big shock. His heart rate must’ve jumped through the roof when he realised he’d been caught.
David realised what he had done and fell to his knees. He admitted his mistake. He didn’t hide. He didn’t try to make up a bunch of excuses, saying she had provoked him or something like that. No, he admitted and confessed his sin before God. And in Psalm 51 he honestly poured out his heart.
It’s a moving psalm. It’s a raw one. It’s one in which a great man and king like David was not afraid to lay his mistakes before God. However, he also knew where to go to ask for mercy. God. He found forgiveness with God. And yes, it’s grace alone.
Within an intimate relationship with God, your sin brings tears to your eyes. You know it’s not fitting. But when you slip up, you know you must quickly admit it and put it on the table. It drives you to kneel before God, open your heart and confess your sin.
Fortunately, you also know that God is merciful and forgives your guilt when you confess it before Him.
Thank You for Your mercy!
