God's word in today's world

Too used to the things of God

Life can so easily become routine. Things so easily become ordinary. We get used to the sun coming up every morning, because it’s been happening for the past million years. We grow used to getting up every day and doing the same things day after day without realising what a privilege it is. We grow used to our spouse with his or her own little habits waking up next to us every day.

I’m sure the couple we met on holiday next to the swimming pool at the Beacon Isle was also used to one another and thought that they would wake up next to each other this morning. But it didn’t happen like that, because yesterday, riding at high speed on his motorcycle, he passed a truck to miss an old lady and collided with an oncoming truck …

We get so used to everything that we no longer see how amazing, how different, how enormous grace is. Often, we have to be forced to come to a standstill by some huge incident in our lives to again recognise the value of everything.

We might have become so used to the Bible that we overlook its real value. The Bible is the Living Word of God. It is not just a bunch of letters that were put together hundreds of years ago and no longer has an impact.

No, together with the work of the Holy Spirit the Bible is still dynamic, still has power and can change human lives. The Bible is the words of God. It is not just ordinary people’s ideas of what they think God would have said. No, the Bible is the living words of the Living God that can have a living impact in the lives of his children. We must believe it and the Word of God will speak to us.

13When you got the Message of God we preached, you didn’t pass it off as just one more human opinion, but you took it to heart as God’s true word to you, which it is …

In the same way, we get used to a life that happens every day like it did the day before, but things can change in an instant. Because you see, the verse in Thessalonians points out to us again that the Living God is at work inside us: 13God himself at work in you believers!

Focus on not getting used to everything. Realise how great God is and what amazing piece of grace it is that He still bends down to us every day and is still involved with us. Tell yourself over and over again that God is working in you with his Spirit. We must make daily appointments to become quiet and to make sure that we listen.

When we are sensitive enough to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit, we’ll go through life so much easier. We’ll stumble less and know what to do when we reach crossroads in our lives, because with his Word before our eyes and his Spirit in our hearts, we can face life with strength.

Scripture

1 Thessalonians 2:13-16

Reflection

Are you living a life that bears witness to a living God?

Do you allow a living God to do things in your life?

Or have you become so used to a certain way of life that you’ve forgotten that a living God is working inside you?

Prayer

Father, I truly need Your words. On my own I struggle to put one foot behind the other. Help me to become still and allow the Spirit to lead me. Help me to use Your Word as a guideline. Amen.
