Tracing my name carved in stone
Sometimes it feels as if nothing in the world is stable. Everyone standing behind a microphone thinks he or she has the answer. Just believe this. Just do this. Just hope that. Then everything will go right – but two days later you hear how that person messed up.
Whether it is matters of faith or politics or finances, the numbers don’t add up. Then I become uneasy and lose sleep. There are more questions than answers. Sometimes I’m so upset by my visionless bumbling around that a dark cloud threatens to settle on me.
Does this happen to you too?
When I find myself in these circumstances, I know I have to hurry to God’s Word. Then I realise that I’ve allowed the circumstances of the world to enter my mind, to affect my being.
I’m not trying to make any excuses, but it’s only human. You see, the world and many of its people sometimes hit us so hard that we want to curl up in a miserable bundle somewhere in a corner and we can’t see any light for the future.
What then?
19But God’s truth stands firm like a great rock, and nothing can shake it. It is a foundation stone with these words written on it: “The Lord knows those who are really his,” and “A person who calls himself a Christian should not be doing things that are wrong.”
God knows about me. God knows me. I am a child of God. Nobody can take that away from me. Not even myself. It doesn’t matter what is going on in the world. It doesn’t matter how many wars are raging. It doesn’t matter what is happening at work. It doesn’t matter if the bank wants to take everything I own. I still belong to God.
God’s foundation is stable. It is written that God knows me. You and I who said yes when God called, our names are engraved on the foundation and nothing and nobody can erase it.
The winds of the world can blow fiercely. The waves can crash over my head. Our life boat can be tossed around and we may feel this is it! But we are anchored to a solid foundation and we will never be torn from it.
God will not throw what belongs to Him to the wolves. You see, God’s love for us is simply too great. Yes, I know that we’re sometimes overcome by worldly circumstances and that we feel as if we’re sinking to the bottom. It is in those circumstances that we should brush our hands over the foundation, tracing our names carved in stone.
Then we’ll hope again. Then we’ll believe firmly again. Not in our own strength and own knowledge and own plans but holding onto the knowledge that our names are engraved on God’s foundation and that He loves us too much to ever allow any power or force to pull us from his grasp.
May this give us peace. May this give us strength to get up and continue.
God knows me and will always protect me! Yay!

Reflection
What is pressing on you?
Is God part of your foundation?
What does it mean that your name is engraved in God?
Prayer
Father, I so needed this message. It’s not going well with me and, yes, sometimes it just becomes too much for me to handle. Thank you for the confirmation that I can know in my heart that You love me. Thank you that I can know that You are protecting me. Amen.
