God's word in today's world

Trust – a main ingredient

I go cycling in our beautiful mountains. I can’t say that I’m always comfortable with the narrow trails. Ok, let’s be honest, I’m quite afraid sometimes. Especially crossing those narrow little bridges. I’m a few lunches ahead, so I’m not always sure the bridge can take my weight.

I rather get off and give the bridge a good look. If I can see in my mind’s eye the little bridge collapsing beneath me and my bike and I crashing down, I look for another way to get to the other side.

Something big is missing here. Trust. My trust that the bridge can do its work and will help me get to the other side disappears like mist before the sun. Without trust, I cannot use the bridge for what it was designed to do.

In the same way, we need trust in any relationship so that both parties can be served from it. If a man gets around and always has a bunch of stories about where he was or wasn’t, there is no trust. Then his wife will not be able to serve him with an open heart.

A healthy relationship needs trust.

This main ingredient was obviously part of the relationship between Enoch and God. That’s why God fetched him in a special manner. 5… We know on the basis of reliable testimony that before he was taken “he pleased God.”  6It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him.

It’s impossible to have a relationship with God if you don’t trust Him 100% and believe that He is real and will save you. How would you be able to serve God of you don’t know if He is awake and sees your suffering? Or would you be able to believe in Him if you doubt that He has the ability to do something about the mountain in front of you?

Faith in God is an essential ingredient in a healthy relationship between a person and God. It’s like the bridge. If I don’t trust that the bridge will take my weight and that I will get safely to the other side by crossing the bridge, I’m going to make another plan.

But we know that we need never doubt God. We don’t have to doubt His power, might and wisdom. Nor His love. I mean, He was prepared to sacrifice His Son and had Him pay for the sins of all sinners. What greater commitment and proof of God’s love do you need?

So, if we struggle to serve God, if our relationship with God is rusty, we shouldn’t throw questions at God. God is stable and eternal. Hy is immovable.

Let’s rather examine our trust and faith. The fault is on our side. We must sit down on a rock and get rid of all the gremlins stealing our faith in God. With our new bag of faith our relationship with God restored, and, like enoch, we will again share special moments with God.

Go and try it.

Scripture
Hebrews 11:1-6

Reflection
Do you believe God?
Do you trust God?
Do you believe that God is always there for you?

Prayer
Father, we’re so used to people disappointing us that we think You will do it too. But You are God, You aren’t human. You are holy and trustworthy. Help me to believe this with my heart and mind. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
