Trust is an essential ingredient
Genesis 6:16-18 Build a roof for it and put in a window eighteen inches from the top; put in a door on the side of the ship; and make three decks, lower, middle, and upper. “I’m going to bring a flood on the Earth that will destroy everything alive under Heaven. Total destruction. “But I’m going to establish a covenant with you.”
When Mother Teresa heard her calling in India in 1946: “Come, be my light”, she had no plan, no money, and no certainty. She only knew that God was asking her to serve the poor of Calcutta. She walked out of the convent with just five rupees in her pocket and a belief that God would provide for her. That was her way of trusting.
But what is incredible is how God trusted her. He entrusted a simple woman with the task of making His love visible in the darkest places on earth. God used her to care for thousands of sick, dying, and forgotten people, precisely because she was trustworthy in the little things. She often said, “God did not call me to be successful, but to be faithful”.
God calls Noah to do something that actually makes no sense. But God trusts Noah, hence the so-called absurd assignment. Noah, on the other hand, trusts God to fulfil His side of the agreement.
Only a profound trust in God enables one to act outside the norm. One can make a mistake so easily, like every year when preachers jump on stage in September and say that Jesus will come this year during the Jewish Feast of Trumpets.
When I say or do something that could hurt our relationship, a crack appears in the trust between my wife and me. And once the foundation of trust is shaken, it takes time to strengthen.
If you can’t trust God to do His part, the chances for an intimate relationship aren’t good. If God can’t trust you, the chances are even less. Therefore, we must live in such a way that God knows He can rely on us, first in small things, and then He can use us for bigger things.
Prayer
Father, I want to live in such a way that You will trust me to do anything for You, even if people think I’m crazy. I trust that You will do what You promise, even though things look very different around me …
