We really are family
I am the youngest of six children. I wasn’t part of the plan, but that’s a story for another day. We’re a close-knit bunch, probably because our father and oldest brother passed away early in our lives.
Every other year around Christmas we all go to the Cederberg Mountains. We braai and make a potjie. We chat until late at night and during the day we all float in the dam and have loads of fun.
When someone suggests that we should skip a year in the mountains, our children are quick to voice their displeasure. “If you don’t want to go, that’s fine, but we’re going because we want to be with the family!”
It’s wonderful to see how the children have taken over. Whenever one visits a town where another lives, they get together, and the photos, with everyone smiling widely, are shared with the family group.
It’s wonderful to be part of such a family. I know I can reach out to any of them at any time if I have a crisis. They will leave no stone unturned to improve my situation.
That’s what family does.
In my own little family, the bonds are also unbreakable. I would do anything for my children. If I hear in their voice that something is wrong, I immediately want to know what it is and what I can do about it.
When Jesus came to earth, He not only paid our debt on the cross on Calvary but also made those who believe in Him his brothers and sisters. He drew us into His family, making us part of God’s family.
4My dear children, you come from God and belong to God. You have already won a big victory over those false teachers, for the Spirit in you is far stronger than anything in the world.
Because we’re part of God and Jesus’ family, we of course enjoy benefits. Just as I would do anything for my children and the rest of my family, God, our Father, and Jesus, our Brother, would also do anything for us.
God is undoubtedly greater than false prophets, who should prepare themselves for severe judgment. Those who speak falsely about God or Jesus will not go unpunished.
Being part of God’s family, of course, extends much further than exposing the false prophets. You can bring anything to the family table, and they will listen.
God often uses the rest of the family here on earth to address the challenges that come our way. This is the essence of family – being there for each other.
We need to keep our eyes open for family in Jesus, our brothers and sisters, who may need help. Maybe you are the one God has chosen to help the family member in trouble.

Reflection
Are you part of God’s family?
Who is your spiritual family here on earth?
Do you allow other believers to carry you when you’re struggling?
Prayer
Jesus, thank you for making me part of God’s family. Thank you for my many spiritual brothers and sisters on earth. Help me to be observant so that I notice when one of them needs help. Amen.
