Yesterday for today, for the sake of tomorrow
When I was studying, I had many jobs. One of them was to help a friend of mine introduce his business to the unfamiliar world. His business was renting out cellphones at the airport. That was when cellphones had just been introduced to our country and was still very new to people.
I still remember when I went to see my brother at the Spur in the Strand with a small brick on my hip. Like everyone else, he was fascinated by the fact that you could phone from anywhere. From where we were sitting at one of the tables at the back, he phoned the manager at the front desk and jokingly complained about the coffee taking so long to get to us.
About a year before, one of his friends came visiting. They called me to tell me about the new VW Golf that talks to its owner. I didn’t believe them. Then he called his car and what do you know, the car responded with a beep-beep. Then he said I must call, but nothing happened. When he called out to the Golf, it beeped again.
I was dumbfounded by this technology, only to find out later that they had taken me for a joke and that it was the alarm system!
Today, we all have cellphones that fit in our pockets and cars with alarms that “talk” to us.
The world keeps changing at supersonic speed. New things come on the market all the time. Yesterday’s stuff is old today. The new things of tomorrow are here today.
People don’t like change. We like experiencing the same from yesterday today, and, thank you, it would be good to have it tomorrow as well.
Change makes us impatient. Continuous change scares us. Where will it all end?
We want to and must have our foundation of yesterday today so that we can build tomorrow on it. That’s comfortable for us and lets us enjoy a stress-free life.
Fortunately, the rock on which we build our foundation is a stable rock: 8For Jesus doesn’t change—yesterday, today, tomorrow, He’s always totally Himself.
Just as Jesus was before creation, He still is today, and will be at the end. As Jesus loved us and was prepared to die on the cross for us, so Jesus still loves us, no matter what we’ve done. And even though we will still mess up in future, His love for us will remain burning high.
The ever-changing world makes us anxious. The Jesus who is exactly the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, calms us. Let’s keep on building our lives on our Saviour and show the world where to find real stability. Let’s stand today on the truth of yesterday to have courage to face tomorrow.

Reflection
How do you feel about all the change in the world?
Does it sometimes make you feel afraid?
How can you always live your trust in Jesus, who is always the same, in life?
Prayer
Jesus, thank you for staying the same in an ever-changing world. Help me to show You to the world so that the people around me can get stuck on You and know that You are their firm foundation. Amen.
