I’m in tears, because I can hardly believe how the Lord is working in my life. I’m astonished by how the Lord makes me experience things in my everyday life so that I can better understand his Word.

I’m in Australia with four friends I’ve known since school. Some of us have known one another for 50 years. It’s an incredible journey, not only back in time, but also all the things we can do here. Yes, sometimes we’re silly, but we’re serious too.

The Australian friend took us on a week-long yacht cruise along the Barrier Reef. I’m over the moon. A dream I haven’t even dreamt yet is coming true. I think I haven’t even been to sea three times in my life. I’m familiar with many things, but I don’t know how everything works.

Like an anchor. We all more or less know what an anchor is supposed to do. We know it keeps the boat fixed in one place. We know it is very necessary to prevent the boat from ending up in dangerous places and more.

That’s the theory.

When I got up the first morning, I read my scripture for the day: ⁹ Their belief in the truth that they have been taught must be strong and steadfast so that they will be able to teach it to others and show those who disagree with them where they are wrong [TLB].  Do you understand why my eyes leaked? Because the almighty God, who is busy balancing galaxies, makes time to use my everyday experiences to teach me to better understand his Word.

It was me who had to pull up the anchor five minutes before my morning devotional!

Lack of an anchor means danger. If the wind doesn’t fill the sails and the engines run out of diesel, we’ll drift along until we run aground on the rocks.

It’s the same with God’s Word. If we don’t use God’s Word as an anchor, if the truth that we have been taught are not strong and steadfast, life will push us on the rocks at some point. It will be stupid of us to go to sleep without lowering the anchor. Somewhere in the night we’ll wake up and it will be too late.

A boat cannot survive without an anchor. A Christian cannot survive without God’s truth, his Word.

A boat must always use its anchor. A Christian must always use the Word of God as an anchor in his or her life.

The people on board must know exactly how to use the boat’s anchor. A Christian must know how to use God’s Word.

The people on the boat must use the anchor at all times. They cannot go to bed one night and think it’s unnecessary. In the same way, Christians must always use God’s Word to prevent them smashing into the rocks along the way!

Make God’s Word your anchor!

Prayer
Lord, thank you for Your Word! You did not leave us in the dark. You gave us your Word as guidance and as an anchor in this confusing and changing world. Please help me to use Your Word well. Amen.
