God's word in today's world

Your CEO

We all see other people in a specific way. Have you noticed that how you see people changes as you get to know them better? A friend and I still laugh about it, because my first impression of him wasn’t good. To me he looked like an arrogant, egotistical man. Things happened and we had to spend some time together and in the process how I saw him changed completely and we became good friends.

In the same way we see Jesus in a certain way and I suspect the way we see Jesus starts with his birth in a stable and ends with his resurrection. But Jesus is so much more than that.

In the previous piece we learnt that Jesus existed even before the beginning, before the earth was created. Now Paul teaches us some other things about Jesus: 17And when it comes to the church, he organizes and holds it together, like a head does a body.

Jesus is the CEO of the church. All who are in the church, whether part of the top structure or a congregant, have to report to Jesus. I suspect we don’t do this properly anymore.

When I was part of the business world, I preferred participative management. I didn’t want to be the boss with the rest as my subordinates. I empowered employees to make their own management decisions. But it was important for us to be in daily contact to ensure that their decisions were within the parameters of the business.

At times, the wheels nearly came off. After discussing the problem and trying to find the cause, we repeatedly found that it was because decisions had been taken outside the business parameters. The results weren’t always so good.

Our church’s results also don’t look so good all the time and I suspect it might be because we do not ask the CEO of the church for advice and guidance. We make decisions on our own, using our own judgment. Often in the Name of the Lord and in all sincerity. However, the problem is that we don’t know everything and cannot see what lies around the corner. And as a result we again and again rush off in the wrong direction. That’s why the world looks like it does out there.

Our church body has no head.

18He was supreme in the beginning and—leading the resurrection parade—he is supreme in the end.

Jesus knows exactly what to do. Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt.

Why are we humans so shortsighted? Why do we want to redesign the wheel? Do we really think we can do better? Really? Let’s be straight and tell each other that our CEO knows everything. Let’s meet with Him every day so that He can advise us. He has all the wisdom we need.

Then joy and peace will flow over us.

Scripture

Colossians 1:15-20

Reflection

Do you believe that Jesus is the CEO?

Does your life say the same thing?

How much time do you spend with the CEO?

Prayer

Lord, I must spend more time with You. When I look back over my life, the stories tell of little time spent with You. I want to spend more time with You. I really need your wisdom in my life. Amen.
