I got up one morning at the beginning of this year and when I had eventually succeeded in tying my shoelaces, I was out of breath. You see, the vacation had taken its toll and found a home around my waist. Now, to reach my shoelaces, I have to get around my stomach to reach down there.

I decided this was not on and went to gym filled with enthusiasm. It was rather full, because at the beginning of the new year, everyone is filled with fresh New Year’s resolutions and they are working hard on them.

I felt quite good after the practice ride and picked up a couple of extra weights next. Strangely, I was tired early that evening and went to bed early.

But the next morning it felt as if someone was holding me down on the bed. I couldn’t lift even one part of my body. After a while I got one leg out and let it fall over the edge of the bed. A while later the other one. Then I had to turn around and Renata wanted to know if I was kneeling to pray.

Rather than commenting, I pushed myself upright. It was really bad getting up in sections. I grunted when she said we weren’t getting any younger and couldn’t just go on like that in the gym.

I said nothing, because I realised she was right. I was getting older. And that wasn’t such a nice thought. Suddenly you realise everything around you is growing older. Our house, the clothes we wear, the computer I’m using. Everything grows older. Even earth is growing older. There will come a time when everything has been used up. Even your body has a due date.

^11-12 Earth and sky will wear out, but not you; they become threadbare like an old coat; You’ll fold them up like a worn-out cloak, and lay them away on the shelf. But you’ll stay the same, year after year; you’ll never fade, you’ll never wear out.

Dr Henry Morris (https://www.icr.org/article/9988) talks about our clock that is winding down:

This remarkable passage … anticipates the famous second law of thermodynamics, or law of entropy, indicating that everything in the physical universe is growing old and wearing out. God created everything in the beginning, winding it up like a great clock, so to speak. Because of sin and the curse, however, it has been running down and “perishing” ever since.

We have a best before sticker, but not Jesus. The Creator God, Jesus, does not get used up. He doesn’t get old. He doesn’t qualify for a due date. How comforting is this! When we reach our due date, Jesus will be waiting. Nothing can happen to Him. He will always be there.

Continue living peacefully. We grow older and getting up becomes harder. We have a sticker with our due date. But fortunately our Creator is exactly the same as He was in the beginning. His love for us will never fade and the day we reach our due date on earth, He will be waiting with open arms.

Lord! So grateful that You remain the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Thank you for waiting for us with open arms. Yes, sometimes growing old bothers me, but I will get over it. Amen.
